What Causes Acne Scars?

Acne scars can form as a result of severe or chronic acne. When the pores become clogged with excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria, it can lead to inflammation and infection. This can damage the surrounding tissue and cause scarring.
There are six types of acne, but typically, only four of them lead to scarring:

  • Pustules: small, red bumps on the skin filled with pus
  • Papules: small, pink bumps that may be tender to touch
  • Nodules: large, painful lumps under the surface of the skin
  • Cysts: painful, pus-filled lumps under the surface of the skin

Some factors that may increase the likelihood of developing acne scar include:

  • Picking or popping pimples
  • Delaying treatment for severe acne
  • Genetic predisposition

While anyone can develop acne scars, they are more commonly seen in individuals with darker skin types because they have more melanin, which can cause the scars to appear darker and more prominent.

Types of Acne Scars

Not all acne scars are the same, and different types of scars may require different treatment approaches.

Atrophic Scars

Atrophic or depressed acne scars are usually flat, sunken areas on the skin. When acne clears, your skin heals by making collagen. If your skin makes too little collagen to fill the area where the acne was, a depressed scar appears. There are three types of atrophic scars:

  • Ice Pick Scars: Deep, narrow scars that resemble small holes in the skin.
  • Boxcar Scars: Wider depressions with sharp edges, often resembling chickenpox scars.
  • Rolling Scars: Shallow, wave-like scars that give the skin a rolling appearance.

Hypertrophic Scars

Hypertrophic or keloid scars are raised and occur when the skin produces too much collagen during healing. They are often firm and can vary in color, being red, pink, or darker than the surrounding skin. Hypertrophic scars are more common on the back or chest.

Treatment Options for Acne Scars

Our team at Peach Dermatology offers a range of treatments for acne scarring, depending on the type of scars and severity. Some acne treatment options include:

  • Chemical peels: These can help reduce the appearance of shallow scars by removing the top layers of skin.
  • Microneedling: This procedure involves making small punctures in the skin to stimulate collagen production, which can improve the texture and appearance of acne scars.
  • Dermal fillers: These can be used to fill in depressed scars and improve their appearance.

In addition to these acne scar treatments, our dermatologists may also recommend skincare products or prescribe medication to manage active acne and prevent further scarring.

Tips for Preventing Acne Scars

While it may not be possible to prevent acne scars entirely, there are steps you can take to minimize their appearance:

  • Avoid picking or popping pimples, as this can cause further damage and increase the risk of scarring.
  • Seek early treatment for severe or chronic acne.
  • Wear sunscreen daily with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect your skin from UV damage that can worsen scarring.
  • Avoid using harsh skincare products that can irritate the skin and cause further breakouts.
  • Use non-comedogenic (non-pore clogging) makeup and skincare products.
